What this tool actually does, where the data comes from, and — more importantly — what it cannot tell you.
Where the data comes from
Every figure on screen is read live from the public Blockscout API for Ethereum
mainnet. There is no API key, no backend of our own, and no account — your browser talks to
the explorer directly. Address labels such as Binance 14 or
Exchange are Blockscout's own public tags, as are the scam flags.
How a map is built
- You give a root address. We fetch its most recent transfers of the asset you selected — native ETH, or one specific ERC-20.
- Transfers between the same pair of addresses are merged into a single edge, with the total value and the number of transfers kept.
- Node size is the total value that moved through that address within this map. Edge thickness is the value on that edge. Particles travel in the direction value moved.
- Double-clicking a node fetches its transfers too and merges them in. The map only ever contains what you have explicitly expanded.
What this cannot tell you
- It is a sample, not the whole history. We read recent pages of transfers, not every transfer since genesis. A quiet address may be fully covered; a busy one certainly is not.
- One asset at a time. Values are only comparable within a single asset, so the map traces ETH or one token — never a mixture. Anything swapped mid-route drops out of view.
- Contract internals are summarised. A swap through a router shows as transfers to and from that router, not as the economic trade a human would describe.
- ETH moved inside contracts is invisible. We read top-level transactions only. The explorer's internal-transaction endpoint regularly takes over 45 seconds on active addresses, so hanging the map was the worse trade. If an address moves ETH mainly through contracts, trace an ERC-20 instead.
- Labels can be wrong or stale. They come from a third party, they lag reality, and absence of a scam flag means nothing was flagged — not that something is safe.
Privacy
Tributary has no server. Your searches go from your browser to Blockscout and nowhere else. The watchlist lives in your browser's local storage. Connecting a wallet is optional, only ever reads your address, and never asks for a signature or a transaction.
